Brodie Van Wagenen's Quote on Tim Tebow Proves He Doesn't Know What He's Doing
By Brian Cass
Most sports pundits scoffed at former Florida Gators legend Tim Tebow when he announced he was going to follow his dreams of playing professional baseball. And after three seasons in the minors with the New York Mets, he still hasn't been called up to the majors.
At 31 years old, time is starting to run out for Tebow, and it doesn't seem like he'll be getting the call up to the bigs soon. However, Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen is somehow leaving the door open with his latest quote:
Don't get us wrong, we'd love to see Tebow finally step into the batter's box at an MLB stadium. He's polarizing for so many reasons, and he would undoubtedly bring more attention to the game.
But, if we're being honest with ourselves, chances are he'll never get to fulfill his dream of playing in the bigs. Not only is he already 31, but he's done little to nothing during his time in the minors. Sure, he's hit some highlight reel home runs, but he's struggled immensely to find consistency at the plate.
Through three seasons, Tebow has only been able to muster up a .228 batting average to go along with a .219 slugging percentage
We're pulling for Tebow, we really are. It's impossible not to root for the guy. But, Van Wagenen clearly doesn't know how the farm system works if he claims Tebow is just a "hot streak" away from being called up.
There are plenty of other players in the Mets farm system who are more worthy of getting the call up to the bigs, so we'll be surprised if Tebow gets that long-awaited call this season.
