Broncos QB Joe Flacco Out For The Season After Hitting IR With Neck Injury
By Michael Luciano
Joe Flacco's first season since he parted ways with the Baltimore Ravens hasn't gone according to plan, as he is in the middle of one of his worst statistical seasons while the Denver Broncos sport a pitiful 2-6 record.
Flacco, who is dealing with a neck injury, was initially expected to be sidelined 4-6 weeks, but in a surprising move, the Broncos opted to place the 34-year-old on IR, ending his season.
Flacco was completing a career-high 65.3 percent of his passes, but he managed just six touchdown passes against five interceptions in eight starts. His 194 yards lost on sacks leads the league and eclipsed the 300-yard threshold just once this season.
With Flacco gone for the year, the Broncos will start former sixth-round pick Brandon Allen against the Cleveland Browns. The University of Arkansas product was impressive in his college days, particularly as a junior and senior when he racked up 50 touchdowns to just 13 interceptions.
They have second round pick Drew Lock recovering from an injury and waiting in the wings to take over as the franchise quarterback, but with the rookie still sidelined, the team promoted Brett Rypien from the practice squad to the active roster.
With his injury putting an early end to his 2019 campaign, and now clocking in at 34 years old, it's fair to wonder if we've seen the last of Joe Flacco in the NFL. At the very least, it's wholly possible that Flacco's days as a starting quarterback are in the past.
Flacco will carry a cap hit of $23.650 million in 2020 and $27.650 million in 2021 after inking a three-year, $66 million deal.
