New Broncos TE Nick Vannett Has Nothing Nice to Say About Tenure With Steelers
By Brady Williams
From the people who brought you Antonio Brown comes an all-new public relations problem. When asked about his time in Pittsburgh, Denver Broncos tight end Nick Vannett said it felt as though he walked into... well, a bad situation. Let's call it that.
Vannett described how an injured roster and some deteriorating play created an atmosphere he wasn't exactly fond of.
He points out that he didn't experience a normal season on Pittsburgh's standards, which may have been the main problem. The injury to Ben Roethlisberger combined with an additional injury to JuJu Smith-Schuster and the absolute debacle of Mason Rudolph being hit in the head by Myles Garret with his own helmet all contributed to a messy campaign.
That messiness made Vannett feel like "the wheels were starting to fall off a little bit" in the Steel City.
Vannett has since signed with the Denver Broncos, whom the Steelers happen to face at home in 2020.
This offseason, Pittsburgh signed tight end Eric Ebron, who was a Pro Bowler as recently as 2018, and have retained Vance McDonald as well. With the Steelers having legitimate options at the position, the Steelers have clearly moved on from Vannett completely. His desire not to speak too much on the unpleasant experience (other than to make it clear it was unpleasant) suggests he's ready to wash his hands of the whole episode as well, but he's certainly said just enough to give him something other than favored nation status in Western PA.
