3 Broncos Veterans Who Could Be Cut After the NFL Draft
By Scott Rogust
The Denver Broncos have successfully made the transition from AFC bottom-dwellers to a team on the rise. Plenty of that is due to their expert drafting in recent years, which includes players like Drew Lock, Bradley Chubb and Courtland Sutton. Now, they enter the NFL Draft with a whopping 12 selections.
With those bountiful draft picks, that means some NFL veterans are in danger of losing their jobs before the start of the 2020 regular season. Here are three that can find themselves looking for a new home after the draft.
3. WR Diontae Spencer
The Broncos hold the 15th overall pick in the first round, and the expectation is that general manager John Elway will give lock another weapon in the form of Jerry Jeudy, CeeDee Lamb or Henry Ruggs III. In that instance, another wideout will have to go. Considering Diontae Spencer is primarily a return man and Ruggs has shown to be a quality kick returner, he's a candidate to be shown the door by the start of the regular season.
2. CB De'Vante Bausby
Even though the Broncos obtained cornerback AJ Bouye from the Jacksonville Jaguars, they still need to improve their depth in the secondary. With a deep cornerback class this year, the Broncos will likely take one within the first three rounds. If that's the case, De'Vante Bausby could be on thin ice. Although he impressed in his five games with Denver last year, he suffered a terrifying neck injury that ended his season. Considering he's a journeyman defensive back, Bausby could have a hard time regaining his roster spot, especially if the Broncos use a high draft pick on a corner.
1. OT Garett Bolles
The Broncos thought they had their left tackle of the future when they selected Garett Bolles in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Three years into his career, Bolles has proven he wasn't worth the selection with his lack of development and discipline. The Broncos are in good shape to select an offensive tackle in the second round this year, so don't be surprised if Bolles gets cut after the NFL Draft. Let's face it, the Broncos aren't exercising his fifth-year option anyway. Might as well cut ties now and move on. They can save $2 million in the process too.
