Browns Are Completely Blowing it by Taking too Long to Find Next Head Coach
By Jerry Trotta
Is the Cleveland Browns' braintrust aware that they have a head coaching vacancy to fill?
It doesn't appear so, and their maddening delay in proceedings has seen Ron Rivera and Mike McCarthy -- two of the best HC's on the open market -- scooped up by the Washington Redskins and Dallas Cowboys.
In the simplest of terms, Cleveland is blowing it.
The last we heard regarding the Browns' search was about their interest in Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, whom they will interview on Monday. To be frank, we're not so sure that's a great pairing.
Urban Meyer's name has been linked with the vacancy, but owner Jimmy Haslam subsequently shot that rumor down.
Now, they're reportedly set to interview Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, who has no previous coaching experience in the NFL.
By the time these interviews are conducted and Cleveland weighs their options, their candidates will have probably taken a job somewhere else.
Even if they don't, you could make the case that Rivera's and McCarthy's no-nonsense blueprint were best suited to handle the Browns' juvenile roster.
Cleveland was quick to can Freddie Kitchens, which, at the time, indicated they would move swiftly in their search for a new HC. That's been anything but the case, and they are now well behind the eight ball.
