3 Offensive Linemen Browns Can Acquire Not Named Trent Williams or Jason Peters
By Jackson Thompson
New Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski has been heralded as an offensive guru, and he will have a lethal arsenal of weapons to use in Cleveland this season. However, how efficiently his offense can use those weapons will depend largely on the play of the offensive line, a unit that could use some help in free agency this offseason.
Despite the two big-name veterans that are expected to hit the market in Jason Peters and Trent Williams, the Browns could go after three options in particular to improve their offensive line.
3. Joe Thuney
Cleveland traded its best guard to the New York Giants last offseason in exchange for Olivier Vernon, and it's a move that has left the Browns with depleted strength in the interior of the offensive line. It's a void that could be filled by signing one of the best, and most versatile, offensive linemen in the league this year in Joe Thuney. Thuney started all sixteen games for the New England Patriots in 2019, committing zero penalties and only allowing one sack. His presence would instantly upgrade the offensive line, no matter where they chose to insert him.
2. Brandon Scherff
Another option for Cleveland in the interior is Brandon Scherff. Scherff, a former top-5 pick by the Washington Redskins in 2015, might have been a first-team All Pro in 2019 if an injury hadn't sidelined him for five games. Injury is certainly a concern for Scherff, as he's missed 15 games in his career, but his talent can certainly outweigh that risk. If he can stay healthy, he could prove to be a key player in Cleveland's offense if the Browns take . chance on the 28-year-old Pro Bowler in free agency.
1. Jack Conklin
The prize of the free agent offensive line market this offseason is Jack Conklin. At just 26 years old, Conklin has already been a first-team All Pro, and for Cleveland, he could be the one piece Cleveland needs for an elite offense. Conklin, as a right tackle, would be an instant and substantial upgrade over Cleveland's current right tackle Chris Hubbard. It's an addition that might grant Baker Mayfield the protection he needs to return to passing efficiency and open up necessary running lanes for running back Nick Chubb.
