This Browns-Lions Draft Trade Could Actually Net Cleveland Isaiah Simmons
By Scott Rogust
The Cleveland Browns won the offseason for the second consecutive year, as they were able to land top free agents in tight end Austin Hooper and offensive tackle Jack Conklin. Even so, the Browns lost starting linebacker Joe Schobert, leaving a glaring hole in the middle of their defense.
Luckily for the Browns, they can replace Schobert with Clemson's Isaiah Simmons in the upcoming NFL Draft. But, they will have to move up in order to secure his services. And it can be done.
The Browns will look towards the Detroit Lions, who hold the third overall pick, to take Simmons. The Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins are going to stay put to select Joe Burrow and Chase Young, respectively. The Lions have a variety of needs and would greatly benefit from trading down and accumulating picks. Cleveland would be willing to do so, especially to add Clemson's do-it-all defender.
For a trade to work, the Browns would (hypothetically) send their tenth-overall pick this year, their 2021 second-rounder, and running back Kareem Hunt to Detroit for pick No. 3.
We're playing devil's advocate here. Trading Hunt would be a bit difficult, because Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot believes that the Browns still have big things planned for the troubled running back, as evidenced by the second-round tender they placed on him this offseason.
If that's truly the case, the Browns can work out a deal without Hunt, replacing him with a mid-round pick in 2020 to finalize the trade.
