Browns Reportedly in Talks With Myles Garrett Regarding Monster Contract Extension
By Scott Rogust
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Myles Garrett, has two years remaining on his rookie contract, but that's not stopping the Cleveland Browns from getting a head start on negotiations.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Browns and their star defensive end have begun talking about a potential mega-contract extension, which could be agreed upon at some point this summer.
Since leaving Texas A&M, Garrett immediately became Cleveland's best player on the defensive side of the ball. Through his first three seasons, the young edge rusher tallied 104 total tackles (32 for loss), 65 quarterback hits, 30.5 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, and 4 passes defensed.
Garrett's sack numbers could have easily increased last season, but he missed out on the final six games of the campaign due to a suspension for his role in the Steelers-Browns brawl. The NFL lifted his indefinite suspension this past February.
You can't blame general manager Andrew Berry for getting a head-start in locking in Garrett for the long haul, considering the price for edge rushers is rapidly increasing. Khalil Mack of the Chicago Bears currently leads all with a $23.5 million annual salary, with Aaron Donald of the Los Angeles following him with $22.5 million.
When you're an organization like the Browns, who have had a long history of futility, you have to keep your best players. That's what Cleveland's attempting to do, and we'll see if a deal is finalized before or during training camp.
