Myles Garrett Could Get Screwed in Contract Negotiations With the Browns After Latest 2021 Salary Cap Update

Since entering the league in 2017, Myles Garrett has been a stud for the Cleveland Browns. Despite missing six games in 2019 due to a suspension after his infamous altercation with Mason Rudolph, he registered 10 sacks. The Browns are reportedly exploring an extension for Garrett, and it's well-deserved. However, a recent update from Adam Schefter could make the process a much bigger headache for the 24-year-old pass rusher.

Schefter said fans and analysts need to keep an eye on the NFL salary cap. If COVID-19 forces teams to play without fans, organizations could be stuck with a massive loss in revenue. The collective bargaining agreement rules state that the yearly salary cap is determined by the collective revenue of the league. Such a massive downturn in profits could decrease the cap by anywhere from $30 million to $80 million.

And that could affect the spending power of the Browns, who have a pretty deep stable of talent already. Garrett could become one of the highest-paid pass rushers in league history, but if the Browns run out of cap space, it will make it a lot harder for him to have his demands met.

After all, if the whole league just has less money to work with, it's going to affect everyone's payday.

Garrett has 30.5 sacks in his career, which is the most for any player in a three-year span in Browns history. He'll certainly command top dollar when his time comes, but it's unclear what that will look like if the 2021 salary cap is significantly altered.
