Browns Overpaying for Gerald McCoy Would Be Huge Mistake
By Jerry Trotta
Let's get one thing clear, people. The Cleveland Browns should NOT give in and overpay for lauded free agent Gerald McCoy.
The six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle met with the franchise on Friday, and though talks reportedly went well, the 31-year-old left Cleveland without signing a deal.
And John Dorsey and Co. should absolutely keep it that way, unless the veteran is willing to take a significant pay cut for a Browns team that is presumably ready for a postseason run. Early reports, however, suggest that is out of the realm of possibility.
Simply put, Cleveland already boasts a DEEP and talented defensive line. Have we forgotten about Myles Garrett, Sheldon Richardson, Larry Ogunjobi, and Olivier Vernon? Though adding McCoy could propel them to another level, taking on his $13 million salary just to jumble their existing rotations is illogical.
Even Garrett himself doesn't sound fond of a potential move for the longtime Buccaneer. “What they decide to do, I’ll be OK with and I’ll accept it and move on, but I think we’re good with what we have,” he said Tuesday at Ellet High School, after a ceremony for a new turf field provided by the Browns.
Cleveland has used much of their salary cap space this offseason, but they still rank fourth in the league with $33 million at their disposal to throw around. The decision for Dorsey, however, is whether he wants to use a considerable chunk of that on a defensive line front that already has more than enough talent.
You know where we stand on the matter.
