The Cleveland Browns could be in for their first winning season in a long time, with several marquee additions to their roster, like Odell Beckham Jr. and Olivier Vernon, breeding good feelings by the Lake. In order to soar where they'd like to, the Browns will have to unlock the true potential of former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield, who made a great impression Year One, but could leap another level with an increased arsenal this season.

In an effort to get the most out of their centerpiece, Browns QB coach Ryan Lindley plans to travel to Oklahoma to pick Lincoln Riley’s brain about Baker Mayfield, uncovering the best way to utilize him in the offense.

Of course, there's plenty of raw talent to base such instruction on already.

Riley has produced back-to-back Heisman Trophy winners and No. 1 overall picks in the NFL Draft in Mayfield and Kyler Murray, making him the authority on the subject. Lindley seems eager to check out how Riley runs his program and what parts of it he can borrow to improve his quarterback.

"Obviously the guy's busy running a powerhouse college football program, so I'm sure it would be tough to try to fit into his schedule, but I'd love to,’’ Lindley said. “Yeah, obviously, after this next week, we've got a little time off and hopefully we can do that."

Not only does Lindley want to understand what Mayfield was taught at Oklahoma, but he wants to absorb the environment he played in. This will help Lindley get a full grasp of all the influences that have shaped Mayfield into the quarterback he is, and what adjustments need to be made so he continues to get better in a new setting.

“Obviously, knowing where (a guy’s) from, especially young guys, kind of where their baseline is, it'd be great to see what they're thinking,’’ Lindley said. “You kind of have a good idea of what they do, but you just want to see how they ingrain the things."

The Browns have not had a solid quarterback in decades, and Lindley is ready to do everything in his power to ensure Mayfield's tenure is long and fruitful.
