Browns Sign Former Saints DE After Releasing Jermaine Whitehead
By Jerry Trotta
The Cleveland Browns had a mess to clean up after Sunday's loss to the Denver Broncos, as starting safety Jermaine Whitehead unleashed a Twitter tirade in the direction of fans who were slighting his performance.
Well, the organization handled it all swimmingly. The statement the Browns subsequently released rightfully condemned Whitehead's actions, and they took things a step further on Monday morning by parting ways with the Auburn product.
That settlement left Cleveland needing to fill a roster spot, and the front office did just that by signing former New Orleans Saints defensive end Porter Gustin to the practice squad.
Gustin is in his first NFL season as an un-drafted rookie out of USC. He was signed by the Saints in May, but was ultimately waived during final roster cuts before the season kicked off in September.
The 6-foot-5, 257-pound edge rusher was significantly productive during his years as a Trojan. Across 31 games (17 starts), he logged 109 tackles and 14 sacks.
The Browns confirmed that they did not need to make a corresponding move by promoting a player to their active roster as tight end Stephen Carlson was promoted from the practice squad on Friday.
