Tom Brady's New Backup Quarterback Sucks
By Michael Luciano
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are putting their playoff hopes for the next two seasons squarely on 42-year-old quarterback Tom Brady, If he goes down due to injury, their backup choice is less than inspiring.
Ian Rapoport confirmed that Blaine Gabbert has signed a one-year deal with the Buccaneers. He figures to have an edge over Ryan Griffin for the QB2 job.
Gabbert was picked by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the first round, No. 10 overall, in the 2011 NFL Draft, one pick after Tyron Smith and one before JJ Watt. Oops.
Gabbert struggled mightily in his three years with the Jaguars, and he's spent the rest of his career bouncing around the league as a backup. Gabbert, who has had stints with the Cardinals, 49ers, and Titans, has 48 career touchdowns and 47 interceptions.

Gabbert was signed by Bruce Arians, who coached him in Arizona, in 2019, but he never played a game for Tampa after shoulder injury ended his season.
Gabbert is a very good athlete for the position, but his positives as a quarterback start and end with that when you consider his average arm strength and poor downfield accuracy. Why a deep ball mastermind like Arians keeps giving him lifelines is beyond us. Brady better not get hurt, or Tampa's season is done.
