Bills Great and 2-Time AFL Champ Elbert Dubenion Dies at Age 86
By Scott Rogust
A legendary figure in Buffalo Bills history has passed away.
The team announced on that former wide receiver, two-time AFL champion, and Bills Wall of Fame member Elbert "Golden Wheels" Dubenion died on Thursday morning at the age of 86.
In the year's leading up to his passing, Dubenion had been dealing with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
Dubenion's passing comes on the 55th anniversary of Buffalo's first-ever AFL Championship when they defeated the San Diego Chargers 20-7. That season, Dubenion recorded 1,139 receiving yards on just 42 catches, averaging out to a ridiculous 27.1 yards per reception, which still stands as the franchise record. Additionally, he posted 10 touchdown receptions that year.
Dubenion's career lasted nine seasons, all with the Bills organization. In that span, "Golden Wheels" caught 294 passes for 5,249 yards and 35 touchdowns. The Bills rewarded Dubenion by enshrining him in the team's Wall of Fame in 1995.
After his playing career reached it's conclusion in 1968, Dubenion served as a scout for the Bills in two different stints, as well as for the Miami Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons.
While Elbert Dubenion is no longer with us, he will forever be remembered by Buffalo Bills fans as a key player for the team's first-ever championship run back in 1964. Rest in power, Golden Wheels.
