Cal Ripken Jr. Doesn't Want Front Office Role With Struggling Orioles
By Jared Kish
Who would want to work for the Orioles right now? Even one of their own, Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr., doesn't want anything to do with the team in any official capacity. And you can't really blame him.
Baltimore, sitting at the bottom of the AL East division, has had a mess of a front office over the past couple years. Former O's vice president Dan Duquette took the heat after overseeing the worst season in Orioles history last year, getting the sack alongside manager Buck Showalter. Only a few months have passed; no wonder Ripken is saying thanks-but-no-thanks.
As the legendary infielder told TMZ, "I don't know about this phase of my life. I kind of feel like relaxing a bit."
Cal seems to be pretty content with just relaxing and signing autographs these days. He's even got himself a new book to promote. To be honest, that sounds like a pretty solid life.
Notably, Ripken does like the rebuild the team is going through. He voiced an appreciation for young guys in the organization having the chance to show what they have. "Every time this happens, young guys get an opportunity," he said.
At 14-28, the O's are far, far away from regaining relevance in their relentless division. But if the outlook is positive down the line, maybe it's worthing giving ol' Cal a call.
