Cam Newton Seems Guaranteed to Go to Patriots After Wednesday's QB Moves
By Michael Luciano
The NFL's quarterback carousel has been turning awfully quickly this week, as Tom Brady, Philip Rivers, Teddy Bridgewater, and Nick Foles are already confirmed to be starting elsewhere next season. And that's definitely not the extent of the list, either.
One name that has been conspicuously absent from most of the rumors of late? Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who was told by the team that he could seek a trade despite never requesting one. A franchise like the Los Angeles Chargers figured to be a perfect landing spot, but the team made it known that they are going with... yes, Tyrod Taylor!
The Chargers figured to be the place most willing to bring in Newton. Given their stunning decision to stick with Taylor as their quarterback, the New England Patriots now appear to be the only team with which Newton could land and start the season as the unquestioned starter.
While Newton's injury history and incongruous fit in a Patriots offense that stresses short accuracy makes this look like an odd fit, something tells us that coaches as smart as Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels will figure out an efficient way to deploy a former league MVP.
Newton has went from one of the hottest commodities in all of football to struggling to find a spot to play in the span of just a few years. New England might be the only place for Cam to go that will guarantee him a starting job, which would be a stark change in play styles after parting ways with the immobile Brady.
