Cam Newton's Cap Hit for 2020 Suggests the Panthers Might Be Better off Just Cutting Him

Though injuries are absolutely behind it, Cam Newton's overall efficiency has plummeted since his MVP-winning 2015 campaign. That year, he threw for 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions while rushing for an additional 636 yards and 10 scores in the Carolina Panthers' run to the Super Bowl.

Since then, the three-time Pro-Bowler has thrown 65 TDs compared to a whopping 44 INTs and has dealt with frequent and recurring injuries, which has undoubtedly affected his ability to use his legs.

Cam's erratic play and foot injury should leave the Panthers thinking if he's worth brining back in 2020. And given his massive cap implications, they may be better off without him. On the roster, Newton would represent a cap hit of $21.2 million, however, the Panthers could cut ties with the QB for just $2 million if they opt against retaining him.

There is also, of course, the imperative factor that the Panthers offense looked rejuvenated with Kyle Allen under center on Sunday versus the Cardinals. The sophomore gunslinger threw for 261 yards and four touchdowns to give Ron Rivera and Co. their first victory in 2019.

Budding receivers DJ Moore and Curtis Samuel were finally unleashed to display their potential with an accurate Allen tossing the pigskin around the gridiron.

Couple that fact with the possibility of the organization saving north of $20 million, and you promptly come to the settlement that moving on from Newton is at least a plausible option to explore.

With that being said, Carolina should give a fully healthy Cam a chance to win back the hearts and confidence of Panthers fans once he recovers.

If, however, the Auburn product continues to underperform following his return, well, the franchise will have to seriously weigh their options.
