3 Teams That Absolutely Need to Call the Panthers About Cam Newton Trade
By Michael Luciano
The Carolina Panthers are doing everything they can to totally turn the page on the Ron Rivera era with Matt Rhule coming in, and Cam Newton is by no means exempt from that. Carolina announced that they are working with Newton on a trade, while the Panthers themselves have maintained a healthy interest in former Saints QB Teddy Bridgewater. With Newton all but on his way out in Carolina, these three teams could be ideal landing spots for him.
3. Chicago Bears
The Bears have also thrown their hat in the Bridgewater ring, implying that they are looking for an upgrade from Mitch Trubisky. Matt Nagy has clearly shown a preference for quarterbacks who can make plays with their legs, and outside of Lamar Jackson, Cam might be the best in the NFL in that regard. Newton, when healthy, is a clear upgrade over Trubisky, but Chicago might lack the draft capital to get a deal done.
2. New England Patriots
The departure of Tom Brady means that New England will be in the market for a starting quarterback for the first time since the Clinton administration. While Cam seems like an incongruous fit in their offense given how his mobility and strong arm will not be highlighted as often as it would in Carolina's scheme, there aren't many better quarterback options on the market for a team looking to win now. New England has more than enough draft picks to make this deal happen.
1. Los Angeles Chargers
The Chargers are a complete sideshow in Los Angeles, and the fact that their offense was totally rancid in Philip Rivers' final season under center made them almost unwatchable. As they move into a new stadium, they need a superstar quarterback that will put butts in the seats while giving their offense the jump start they need. If Cam is able to stay healthy, he could check both of those boxes for Anthony Lynn and the Chargers.
