One of the Yankees' key outfielders is nearing a return to the major league team...well ahead of schedule.

Cameron Maybin is set to join the team's Triple-A squad in Scranton Wilkes-Barre for his rehab assignment, beginning as soon as he can get on the field.

Maybin was placed on the injured list on June 23 with a Grade 2 calf strain. He was removed from a game on June 21 after he described feeling a pop in his calf.

Up until the Yankees had to place him on the injured list, he had been everything they could have asked for and more. After acquiring him from the Cleveland Indians in late April, he slashed .314/.391/.500 with five home runs in 42 games.

In addition to giving the Yankees a solid bat in the order, he also gave them speed on the basepaths. He stole six bases before hitting the injured list, a number that ranks second on the team, trailing only Brett Gardner's eight.

With injuries to sluggers Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge plaguing the team at the time, he was nothing short of a gift from the baseball gods.

Now he's on the brink of a return. Even though the Yankees aren't in as desperate need of him as they were back when they first traded for him, and his return may send Mike Tauchman packing back to Triple-A, Maybin will at the very least provide them with some quality outfield depth on the bench.
