The Caps stranglehold on the Metropolitan Division is dwindling, as the suddenly-surging Penguins are just four points behind, with Washington having one game in hand. The Islanders, meanwhile, hold the top Wild Card spot despite a 4-4-2 record over their last ten games. New York's inability to consistently score with the top teams in the East is problematic with the Stanley Cup playoffs only months away.

The game, however, seems secondary compared to the significance for Ovi, who chases 700 in the latest of many career accolades he's on pace to break. Despite the odds, Ovechkin could very well become the NHL's all-time leading goal scorer by the time his career is over (barring injury), and would pass Wayne Gretzky in the process.
