'Captain Andrew Luck' Twitter Account Posts Emotional Farewell Following QB's Retirement
By Sam Dunn

The day has come for a battle-hardened soldier to lay down his arms. For four years, football fans have found themselves amused time and again by the "Capt. Andrew Luck" Twitter account, a running Civil War-themed narration of the Indianapolis Colts quarterback's career. Written as a series of letters to his mother straight from the killing fields, the feed gradually became a true staple of NFL Twitter.
Now, with Luck shockingly revealing his intentions to retire from football, the Captain had to respond in kind.

The quill has never felt more heavy. I have made the decision to holster my sidearm permanently. I shall battle no more. The decision is difficult, but, as the hogs taught me, I must be true to myself. I am coming home to care for you and the farm.

What is this feeling? This sinking, burdensome feeling in my chest? I don't like it.
War is hell, folks. Football injuries are of no comparison, but enough is still enough. A history of nagging injuries just became too much for Luck, who said after Saturday's preseason game that football just stopped bringing him joy as a result.
In the meantime, his fellow warriors have extended words of support and gratitude.

This war has been hell for a lot of men. The injuries you've sustained on the battlefield would have made lesser men retire long ago. Enjoy your well deserved retirement and it was an honor to share the same field of battle with you. God speed.
Signed
Brig.Gen Rodgers
At ease, solider. You've more than earned the right to go home at long last.
