Cardinals Announce Contract Extensions for John Mozeliak, Mike Girsch and Manager Mike Shildt
By Parker White
After a 2019 season where the St. Louis Cardinals won the NL Central and reached the NLCS before being defeated by the eventual World Series champion Washington Nationals, the Cardinals brain trust is being retained.
Cardinals owner William DeWitt Jr. announced that President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak and General Manager Mike Girsch have received contract extensions to stay in St. Louis.
Along with those two primary decisionm akers, the Cardinals also announced that manager Mike Shildt is being retained, and has received a three-year contract extension.
Shildt's entire coaching staff is also being brought back behind him.
Mozeliak will be under contract for four more years, as he received a three-year extension. Girsch had his 2020 option exercised by the team, while also receiving an additional two more years to his contract.
Whether they like it or not, these three men are tied to the hip. Whatever happens from here, the top two guys in the front office and the on-field staff will win and lose together, after the announcement of these extensions. Playoff series are eternally random, and judging this group harshly after a devastating NLCS exit (following a rollicking NLDS road Game 5 victory, of course) would be misguided.
For now, the organizational formula appears to be working.
