Cardinals Reportedly Discussing Contract Extension With Yadier Molina
By Jack Murphy
Yadier Molina has spent his entire 16-year career as the backstop for the St. Louis Cardinals and he may be spending a few more seasons with the Redbirds.
The Cardinals are reportedly discussing a possible contract extension with the 37-year-old Molina, whose contract is set to expire at the conclusion of the 2020 season.
Yadi is on the last leg of a three-year, $60 million deal. Many expected Yadi to hang up the cleats after his current pact was up, however the man is a baseball machine and it's no surprise he's looking to keep playing the game he loves.
Don't expect him to get $20 million per season this time around given his age, but Cards fans can rest easy knowing he'll be a producer and tremendous veteran presence for a team that's gotten a bit younger.
In 2019, Molina finished the season with a .270 batting average and 10 home runs in 113 games. Those numbers don't jump off the page, but Yadi's leadership and incredible ability behind the plate are where he makes his money. And talk about longevity -- he's played in at least 110 games every season since 2005.
No baseball fan -- except those in Chicago -- will be upset with more years of Yadi!!
