Cardinals Reportedly a Potential Suitor for David Price if Red Sox Trade Him
By Scott Rogust
While Gerrit Cole is the most discussed pitcher at the MLB Winter Meetings, David Price has garnered some attention as of Tuesday night. A report from ESPN's Jeff Passan revealed that Boston Red Sox general manager Chaim Bloom is looking to shed salary from the payroll and is exploring trading pitcher David Price.
But which team would go get him?
According to Jon Morosi, the St. Louis Cardinals could be interested in acquiring Price if the Red Sox do make him available for trade.
As Morosi mentions, the Cardinals have been infatuated with Price for a long time, dating back to 2016, when they finished as runners up for the left hander in free agency.
A trade for the Cardinals would be easy, but for the Red Sox, it could present itself as a challenge. Price is due $96 million over the next three seasons, so Boston would likely have to send a young prospect and cash to get him off the books.
St. Louis' pitching rotation ranked as the fifth-best in all of MLB in terms of ERA (3.80), but didn't possess the necessary star power to make a deep run in the postseason. Case in point, the Cardinals were swept in the NLCS by the Washington Nationals' three-headed monster of Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, and Patrick Corbin.
Price's 2019 campaign was hindered by numerous injuries, resulting in him recording a 4.28 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 107.1 innings.
Whether the Boston Red Sox move Price is anyone's guess. But if they do, the St. Louis Cardinals appear to be interested.
