Cardinals Get Some Major Love With 6 Gold Glove Finalists
By Sam Dunn
The St. Louis Cardinals willed their way past the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS only to run into the Washington Nationals buzzsaw-- but that doesn't mean their season ended up a disappointment. Winning the NL Central is no joke given the depth of talent there, but it's the way that they did it that's getting plaudits today.
The finalists for baseball's 2019 Gold Glove awards were released Thursday, and the Redbirds had a whopping six players make the cut.
It's hard to find a more brilliant middle infield pairing defensively than Paul DeJong and Kolten Wong, and each has a chance to be justly rewarded for their efforts for the first time, as does starter Jack Flaherty and outfielder Harrison Bader.
Paul Goldschmidt is already a three-time Gold Glover, but he's got nothing on the great Yadier Molina. Yadi, surely one of the greatest defensive players in modern baseball history, can make it 10 Gold Gloves with a win this year.
In so many ways, the cupboard is far from bare in St. Louis. This team fell short of its postseason goals this time around, but given the strong defensive identity they've established, the best is yet to come.
