Cardinals Sign Well-Traveled Infielder Brad Miller
By Adam Weinrib
The St. Louis Cardinals are once again planning to roll the dice in an effort to fill out their bench.
In an effort to add some Matt Carpenter-like slugging (and Matt Carpenter-like lack of batting gloves) on a budget, the Cards are reportedly signing Brad Miller ahead of Spring Training.
With position players on the verge of reporting to both Arizona and Florida, now's the time when many of these marginal deals get sorted out.
And, though we forgive you if you didn't notice last year, the addition of Miller should actually be a pretty valuable one if he sticks in St. Louis -- he performed above-average for the Phillies, after starting the season in Cleveland, and then resuming it with the Yankees' Triple-A team in Scranton.
The now 30-year-old Miller has never had a problem slugging, rocketing a career-high 30 homers out of the yard for the 2016 Tampa Bay Rays. His defense and on-base skills have always registered as subpar, but neither low mark was enough to downgrade his standout 2019, in the eyes of the statisticians.
