The Cardinals' bullpen took a major hit when it was revealed that star closer Jordan Hicks revealed Hicks tore the UCL in his right elbow.

The Cardinals' 22-year-old closer had an MRI Monday to address triceps pain in his arm, revealing the worst case scenario injury, and now a date has been set for him to have the issue repaired.

Hicks will go under the knife Wednesday morning, and will be sidelined for 12-13 months as a result of the Tommy John surgery.

Before the tear, the flame-throwing Hicks posted two wins, 14 saves and a 3.14 ERA in 28.2 IP this season. His 14 saves ranks ninth in the National League.

Hicks is known around the league for his incredible velocity, as he regularly hits 103 mph and has touched 105 mph against the Phillies this season with his blazing fastball.

St. Louis' bullpen currently sits 10th in the majors with a 4.08 ERA, but this injury will surely knock them down a few pegs. The Cardinals sit only 2.5 games back of the Cubs in in the NL Central at 40-37 on the season.

The Cardinals will take their time with Hicks' recovery, knowing the young closer has plenty of potential and a bright future ahead of him.
