VIDEO: Entire Cardinals Team Watches Jack Flaherty Warm up for Spring Debut in Awesome Gesture
By Michael Luciano
The St. Louis Cardinals are the owners of one of Spring Training's most unique traditions that most baseball fans outside of the Midwest are probably unaware of. In keeping with the tradition started by the late Darryl Kile, among others several decades ago, the entire Cardinals roster watched the first Spring Training warmup of the season, which happened to be delivered by ace Jack Flaherty before he took on the New York Mets.
Flaherty didn't allow a run in a few innings of work as the Cardinals took the Mets down 2-0. Flaherty, who went 11-8 with a 2.75 ERA last year and put up a WAR of 6.0, has already been named the Opening Day starter for St. Louis, a privilege he jealously guards.
Flaherty is one of the most fascinating pitchers to watch when he's cooking in all of baseball given his masterful command of the strike zone, so it's no wonder that the entire team wanted to get an up close and personal look at why the 24-year-old was among the most unhittable pitchers in the league last season.
