Cardinals Trade Outfielder Adolis Garcia to Rangers
By Jerry Trotta
The holiday season has not been kind to Cardinals outfielder Adolis Garcia.
On Wednesday, the 26-year-old was designated for assignment by the club. Fast forward to Saturday evening, and St. Louis has now offloaded him to the Texas Rangers for cash considerations, the team announced.
At one point, Garcia was one of the Cards' most touted prospects in their farm system, rating as highly as No. 9 by Baseball America after signing a $2.5 million signing bonus with the franchise back in 2017.
The Cuba native appeared in 21 games for St. Louis in 2018, but mustered just two hits in 17 at-bats. He spent the entirety of 2019 with Triple-A Memphis where he enjoyed success, slashing .253/.301/.517 alongside 32 home runs, 96 RBI, and 14 stolen bases.
The acquisition could prove to be a steal for Texas should Garcia make the necessary jump to suceed in the MLB. That, of course, is a big IF, but his potential his apparent.
In a corresponding move, the Rangers opted to designate right-hander Jimmy Herget for assignment in order to clear up Garcia's spot on the 40-man roster.
