As much as we all want baseball back as soon as possible, Rob Manfred and the powers that be cannot afford to mess this up.

For one, there are lives at stake here, as COVID-19 has proven to be a formidable threat to the general population. As much as MLB fans are calling for the return of our pastime, restarting the season too soon would have disastrous consequences.

Adam Wainwright, in particular, shares this concern with many fans.

"My biggest concern is that we get things going before we have an incredible plan, before we have a great system, and we would have to shut it down again," Wainwright said on MLB Network Radio. "If you have to shut it down again you might as well just play for next year."

Wainwright has a valid point. If MLB were to restart the 2020 season, only for a player to test positive, they would risk a spread of COVID-19, which would eventually cause them to suspend operations yet again.

The apparent rush back to everyday life after flattening the COVID-19 curve isn't helpful in our quest to bring sports back in a timely manner. The more irresponsible we are, the longer we'll have to wait.
