New York Mets rookie superstar Pete Alonso is garnering respect from some of the franchise's greatest players.

In a show of class and appreciation, Carlos Beltran called Alonso to congratulate him after he slugged his 42nd long ball of the year, breaking his single-season record for most home runs by a Mets player on Tuesday. Beltran's record of 41 stood since the 2006 season, which he shared with Todd Hundley who belted as many in 1996.

Alonso has done magical things for the Mets this year, and his record-breaking 42 home runs are just the tip of the iceberg. An All-Star and winner of the 2019 Home Run Derby, he's been the life and soul of Mets' offense for practically the entire season.

Beltran spent 20 years in the majors, pounding out 435 home runs of his own in the process. He knows when he sees something special, prompting him to reach out to Alonso. The record Beltran set back in 2006 stood for more than a decade.

The fact that the rookie slugger was able to break the milestone with such ease is a testament to his raw power at the plate, and he has plenty of time to build on his current tally.
