Carlos Beltran Contract Details With Mets Reportedly Revealed
By Jerry Trotta
The New York Mets prolonged managerial search (finally) came to an end on Monday as the organization announced that they would be hiring former All-Star outfielder Carlos Beltran.
It's a settlement that should leave fans in Flushing with a smile on their faces, even though the club's braintrust let Joe Girardi slip through their grasp and into the clutches of the NL East rival Phillies because of their preposterous three-interview blueprint.
Brodie Van Wagenen and Co. clearly believe in Beltran as the Amazins have just disclosed that their 22nd skipper in franchise history has officially signed a three-year deal, with a club option for a fourth year, worth roughly $3 million.
That's about the length and annual average value that an individual with no past managing experience on his or her resume, regardless of his apparent baseball wisdom, is expected to receive.
It's simply a move that all Mets fans can get behind, and those who are feeling indifferent about the hire better come around because Van Wagenen disclosed in the press release that Beltran's introductory press conference will take place next week.
We really thought that Jeff Wilpon and BVW would blow it, and they kind of did with Girardi, but we can't slight them for Beltran's hire. He was becoming an MLB manager sooner rather than later and was largely considered a hot commodity in the industry.
