Carlos Beltran Reveals Mets Manager Job is Only Gig He Wants and Plans to Turn Down Other Interviews
By Scott Rogust
The New York Mets are exploring a vast majority of candidates for the team's vacant managerial position. Ownership is reportedly eyeing a veteran skipper, but a wild card has entered the fray in the form of former Met slugger Carlos Beltran.
With seven other managerial openings in the league, Beltran has plenty of options for his first potential gig.
On Sunday, however, Beltran revealed that he turned down interviews with the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs, citing his exclusive interest in the Mets job.
Beltran will only interview for the Mets job because he lives in New York, and feels it's "the right fit" for him at this time.
With a plethora of options for Beltran to begin his transition to managing, his statement shows how seriously he wants to be New York's next skipper. Let's not forget that Beltran interviewed for the Yankees open gig in 2017, a job which was awarded to Aaron Boone.
Beltran has some stiff competition, as he will have to prove his wits and will against Joe Girardi, Mike Bell, and Derek Shelton (and, theoretically, Joe Maddon). However, MLB insider Jon Heyman reports that Beltran is a "very serious candidate" to land the job.
All eyes will be in Flushing, Queens in the coming weeks, as the New York Mets choose their new manager.
