Carlos Beltran Will Get First Known Callback Interview for Mets Manager Job
The discussion as to who will be the New York Mets' next manager have started to seriously heat up. Since the recent firing of Mickey Callaway, the team has interviewed numerous candidates for the vacant managerial spot, including Carlos Beltran. And the former Mets star is getting called back for another round of talks.
Beltran might have the edge against his competitors. The Mets aren't known to have invited any other candidates for a callback as of this time.
It's a bit surprising that he's getting a second interview already, to be fair, especially considering guys like Joe Girardi and Skip Schumaker have had much more experience as coaches than the nine-time All-Star.
This isn't a knock against Beltran and his baseball knowledge, but the Mets front office has had a track record of making poor decisions in the recent past, the most recent being the fateful Edwin Diaz trade with Seattle.
All told, Beltran would probably be better suited managing a rebuilding team for his first job (even if he doesn't want to).
If he does well with young team in transition, then he'd be someone to consider for a squad with postseason potential like the Mets. But for now, he's getting a long, hard look in Flushing.
