Carson Wentz Not Taking a Noticeable Leap in 2019 Should Be Eagles' Paramount Concern

Sunday's rematch of Super Bowl LII between the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots was, for the most part, a snooze fest.

Both offenses were largely inept as just 27 total points were scored, but the biggest storyline from the game was Carson Wentz's inability to deliver in big moments, missing numerous throws despite the blame being placed on wideout Nelson Agholor.

Say what you will about the injuries that have decimated the Eagles' receiving corps, but Wentz is simply too talented for us to use that as an excuse. In fact, we haven't seen the North Dakota State product this erratic since his rookie campaign in 2016.

How many times on Sunday was Wentz inaccurate on throws he should be completing in his sleep? We lost count, but that concept was definitely most evident on Philadelphia's last real chance to tie things up at 17 in the fourth quarter.

Folks, the 26-year-old gunslinger wasn't close on any of those heaves. We obviously aren't basing this assessment on three throws with the game on the line, but it did serve as a perfect outline for Wentz's play this season.

This has precisely been the issue through the year's first 10 games. Wentz isn't coming through when the team needs him to complete the big pass or make a remarkable play. Aside from the Birds' big win over the Packers earlier in the season, there's yet to be a trademark Wentz moment you can put your finger on.

Through 10 games, the former No. 2 overall pick is completing just 61.2% of his pass attempts (210-of-343) for 2,274 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions.

Those are fine figures, but shouldn't we expect more from an MVP-caliber talent that signed a four-year, $128 million contract in the offseason? We absolutely should, and fans in the City of Brotherly Love that are angry have every right to be.
