4 Perfect Destinations for Cavaliers Big Man Tristan Thompson
By Jerry Trotta
The Cleveland Cavaliers are a calculated calamity that must consider blowing up their entire roster ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline. Simply put, everybody on John Beilein's roster outside of Collin Sexton, Darius Garland and Kevin Porter Jr. should be expendable.
That brings us to 28-year-old big man Tristan Thompson, whose name has been swirling around the rumor mill in recent days with the cutoff just days away.
There are a slew of teams in need of an elite rebounder and equally-imposing defender. Let's highlight some of them, shall we?
4. Boston Celtics
Boston has one of the deepest starving rotations in the Association, but their depth, particularly in the front court should concern Celtics fans. Daniel Theis, Enes Kanter and Semi Ojeleye don't inspire much confidence, why is why Thompson would fit perfectly in Brad Stevens' rotation.
3. Portland Trail Blazers
Answer this, Rip City faithful: do you really want the likes of Caleb Swanigan and Nassir Little playing valuable minutes down the stretch? No way. Trevor Ariza has been superb since arriving in a trade with the Kings, which tells us that Thompson would fit in just as swimmingly. Portland offers nothing in terms of an imposing presence behind Hassan Whiteside, and acquiring Double T would go a LONG way in aiding their surge back into the Western Conference playoff picture.
2. Miami Heat
The thought of Bam Adebayo and Thompson locking down the paint should immediately persuade fans in South Beach of this possible deal. Miami could include Justice Winslow, who, despite his inability to stay healthy, has a world of talent and is still just 23 years old, and potentially a future pick in return. Should the Heat land Thompson, NOBODY, would want to meet them in the playoffs.
1. Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks have been one of the NBA's surprising delights this season, as they sit at 30-19 through 49 games, just two games back of the No. 4 seed. They have one of the best benches in the league but have yet to fertilize a replacement for Dwight Powell, who is lost for the year with a ruptured Achilles. Enter Thompson, a more accomplished defender averaging better numbers -- 11.9 points and 10.4 rebounds per game on 50.8% shooting. The former champ could flourish in Rick Carlisle's system.
