VIDEO: Celebrate the 15th Anniversary of Matt Hasselbeck's Overtime Disaster Against the Packers
By Sean Facey
Confidence is usually a good thing in small quantities. It helps athletes play up to their opponents and often leads to some quality play. Too much of it, though, and you could end up being enshrined as a fool. Just ask Matt Hasselbeck, who 15 years ago today made his infamous "We want the ball and we're gonna score" comment in the NFC Wild Card Game against the Green Bay Packers.
A few plays later, of course, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback promptly deliver a pass straight into the waiting arms of Al Harris, who took the ball all the way back for a walk-off pick-six in overtime.
Now that's what overconfidence can get you: sports immortality in the worst possible way.
The Seahawks ultimately managed to push that embarrassing moment to the back of everyone's minds with the notorious "Beastquake" touchdown and their Super Bowl 48 victory over the Denver Broncos.
But no matter what happens, Hasselbeck's words will forever be remembered. They will serve as a reminder that nothing is every guaranteed, especially in sports.
