Chargers Are Setting Themselves Up to Draft New QB With Anthony Lynn Extension
By Michael Luciano

The Los Angeles Chargers don't appear to be letting their 5-11 record in 2019 bother them, as they decided to reward head coach Anthony Lynn with a brand new contract.
Lynn only has one year left on his deal, and the former Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator has since earned a new multi-year deal that will keep him in LA for the foreseeable future.
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn was given a contract extension this past week that now leaves him with "multiple years on his contract," a source told ESPN.https://t.co/Nxzslu9Grs

Lynn's Chargers were a disaster in 2019, winning just five games despite coming into the season with playoff aspirations. This comes after Lynn went 9-7 in his first year in charge, and 12-4 with a playoff game win in Year 2.
With Philip Rivers all but gone and the Chargers potentially interested in using the No. 6 pick in the draft on a quarterback like Oregon's Justin Herbert, it seems this move could give the incoming quarterback the promise of stability rather than having to deal with a new head coach in his second season.
Anthony Lynn, whose original contact expired after the 2020 season, said he had "no problem betting on myself" when asked about an extension during his season-closing press conference. Now, he doesn't have to worry. https://t.co/WiljTq6GMX

Lynn has proven he can coach, as his 27-25 record attests to, but he needs to show that his ability is closer to 12-4 rather than the 5-11 we saw last year. Whomever is under center will benefit from the organization's steadfast commitment to Lynn.
And it seems likely at this point it'll be a kid who needs Lynn's leadership, as opposed to a veteran like Tom Brady.
