Chargers Fire OC Ken Whisenhunt During Monday Night Football News Dump
By Michael Luciano
The Los Angeles Chargers have limped to a 3-5 start after opening the year with Super Bowl aspirations, and are shaking things up on their coaching staff to try and recapture their mojo.
LA announced that they have fired offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt, who has been with the team since 2016. They have not named an interim OC.
All of this went down...right in the middle of Steelers-Dolphins, this week's impressively unwatchable Monday Night fare.
Whisenhunt, who got his start in Pittsburgh under Bill Cowher, was the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals for six seasons. While he went 45-51, he took the team to the Super Bowl, falling to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII. He was this team's OC in San Diego in 2013, and then proceeded to go 3-20 in two years as head coach of the Tennessee Titans.
Despite boasting Philip Rivers at quarterback, Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler in the backfield, and Keenan Allen at wide receiver, the Chargers rank just 17th in yards per game. This change needed to be made, as the offense just looked stale in recent weeks.
In his day, Whisenhunt was a terrific offensive mind who took a moribund franchise to the Super Bowl. His failure to adapt has left him looking a bit archaic, and the Chargers had no choice but to let him go if they want to save their season.
