This Chargers-Lions Draft Day Trade Could Screw the Dolphins and Give LA Tua Tagovailoa
By Scott Rogust
The 2020 quarterback draft class is one of the deepest in recent memory -- yes, even including the crop from the 2018 NFL Draft. Joe Burrow is highly expected to go first overall to the Cincinnati Bengals, leaving Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa on the board for several hungry sharks.
Many believe that Tagovailoa could fall to the Miami Dolphins at the No. 5 spot on the draft board. However, there's ample opportunity for a team to leap ahead of them.
That team should be the Los Angeles Chargers, who need a signal caller, no matter how much they praise Tyrod Taylor. Luckily for them, they can make a deal with the Detroit Lions to move up the draft board.
The Lions are a team that could greatly benefit from a trade down, as they can accumulate enough draft picks to address their various positions of need (mostly on defense, with many intriguing prospects all in range).
As for the Chargers, they're just a quarterback away from potentially competing in the AFC West. They have a dominant defense, and improved the right side of their offensive line via free agency. It's quite the coincidence, as Tagovailoa is a left-handed quarterback.
So what would it take for a trade up? The Chargers would send their 2020 first-round pick (No. 6), 2020 second-round pick (No. 37), and 2021 first-round selection to secure the third overall pick to select Tagovailoa.
This is a massive win for both parties. Los Angeles gets their heir-apparent to Philip Rivers, while the Lions can use the draft package to improve on both sides of the ball.
