We all know that Kobe Byrant had a unique competitive drive that was singular, even ferocious. Barkley described a time in which the 18-time All-Star refused to shoot in the second half of a game because critics had accused him of ball-hogging. The Sixers and Suns legend criticized Bryant for trying to make a statement during the middle of an important game. Afterward, the Mamba proceeded to rip Barkley at length.
Supposedly, the two texted back and forth -- with some adult language involved -- as they tried to defend their points. When Barkley said he wanted to talk, Bryant said no, and the two went on arguing. Eventually, both of them made up, and were able to laugh about the situation years later.
This story is just another demonstration of Bryant's competitive drive and headstrong nature. The Lakers icon is simply one of a kind, and we can't think of too many other athletes that would go to such lengths out of sheer self-belief.
After Bryant's heartbreaking passing, the best we can do to mourn his loss by honoring his life. Stories like Barkley's that epitomize the values the five-time NBA champion help us accomplish this goal.
