3 Cubs Players Who Will Be on Trade Block in 2020
By Jerry Trotta
In 2019, the Chicago Cubs stumbled to an 84-78 record. They missed out on the postseason in miserable fashion with a brutal collapse in the final two weeks of the season, during which the club lost 10 of 12.
If the Cubs can't rebound from that disappointing finish and find themselves out of contention at the trade deadline this time around, don't be surprised if front office boss Theo Epstein looks to sell. And we aren't just talking about damaged goods being shopped; a number of high-profile players can also be expected to be expendable.
With that in mind, here are three Cubs players that will be on the trade block during the 2020 season.
3. Yu Darvish
Yu Darvish is undoubtedly a fan favorite in the Windy City, but it's just good business for the Cubs to consider their options and look to cash in on the four-time All-Star at the deadline. The haul could become even more favorable if he's healthy and pitching up to his superstar potential. Darvish would be a welcomed addition to any contender looking to add a starting pitcher, and the Cubs might leap at the chance to avoid having to pay him the nearly $60 million he's owed from 2021 through '23.
2. Kyle Schwarber
Kyle Schwarber's name has surfaced in trade rumors in the past, and we see no reason why that narrative wouldn't continue into the 2020 season. As much as Chicago adores his work with the bat, his defense -- as hard as he's worked to improve in that department -- is still a disaster. Schwarber is as unsafe as any player on this Cubs roster, and if Epstein and Jed Hoyer find the right buyer, a haul could come back to the North Side in exchange for his services.
1. Kris Bryant
Entering the offseason, it seemed like a sure thing that Chicago would deal Kris Bryant, a former NL MVP. His service time grievance with the organization likely played a role, though the worst of that headache increasingly feels like it's blown over. The rumors surrounding Bryant haven't entirely died, howevr, and though we feel that the Cubs should have dealt him earlier in the winter, he'll likely find himself in trade rumors regarding contending teams once again this summer.
