Chiefs Expected to Free up More Cap Space by Declining Cam Erving's 2020 Option
By Jerry Trotta
A report dropped earlier in the week which claimed that the Kansas City Chiefs would press the issue in terms of preserving cap space this offseason.
That news was followed with the organization's reported intentions to franchise tag star defensive tackle Chris Jones. Now, however, Kansas City is being more conclusive in its settlements.
According to Terez Paylor of Yahoo! Sports, the Chiefs aren't expected to pick up offensive lineman Cameron Erving's team option for 2020. The decision to part ways with Erving will save the franchise $3.2 million.
The former No. 15 overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft came over to Kansas City via trade in 2017, and most analysts will tell you that he's failed to live up to his first round billing. Erving appeared in 40 games over his three seasons with the team and served as one of its most valuable reserves on the offensive line.
Out of 40 games with Kansas City, Erving started 25.
Now that Erving's fate has been determined, the Chiefs' braintrust will now have to decide on the club options for both tailback Damien Williams and linebacker Damien Willson before the start of the NFL's new league year on March 18.
