This Chiefs-Dolphins Trade Involving Sammy Watkins Could Actually Work
By Michael Luciano
Even with all the great players on the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, the highest-paid player on their roster by a considerable margin is wide receiver Sammy Watkins, and his $21 million cap hit has spurred speculation that the Chiefs are taking trade calls in order to give them some financial breathing room.
After all, Watkins has just one 1,000-yard season to his name and has dealt with injury issues his entire career.
With that being said, he still only 26 years old and can be an asset for an offense looking to take the next step or stretch the field.
In need of another wide receiver to go alongside DeVante Parker, the Miami Dolphins should give Kansas City a call, as they have more than enough cap space to absorb Watkins' contract.
Miami has an armada of premium picks, but they likely won't need to surrender one to pull off this deal. Rather, trading the hefty contract of wide receiver Albert Wilson, who has experience and past success in Andy Reid's offense, and his $10.8 million cap hit could help entice the Chiefs to deal Watkins.
While Brett Veach will likely insist in a late-round pick as compensation for Watkins, that shouldn't be an obstacle to a deal. Miami gets a solid No. 2 wideout who they can perhaps sign to an extension, while Kansas City stocks up on late-round draft picks while adding a reliable, familiar face in return.
Miami still needs to figure out who is going to be under center next season, but that shouldn't stop them from adding wide receivers to make life easier on whoever is the starting quarterback. As Watkins proved in the Super Bowl, he's a more than reliable target when the chips are down and you need a conversion.
