Photo of Chiefs QB Len Dawson Smoking Cigarette During Halftime of Super Bowl I Remains Incredible
By Michael Luciano
With the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl for the first time since Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson led them to a famous win in 1970, now is the perfect time to remind everyone that for all the pomp and circumstance around the modern NFL, it's a 6-0, 190-pound quarterback from the 60s who is featured in arguably the most amazing single photograph in pro football history.
At halftime of Super Bowl I, which pitted the Chiefs against Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers, Dawson was famously snapped smoking a cigarette and drinking a Fresca in the locker room at halftime.
The cig and Fresca didn't do much to help Dawson and coach Hank Stram, as they were on the wrong end of a 35-10 beatdown by one of Lombardi's greatest teams.
Dawson would get his revenge against the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV, of course, but he didn't have nearly as much pure swag in that game as he did in that inaugural NFL-AFL super-clash.
Dawson might have come up on the short end of the stick in his first taste of Super Bowl action, but he made it to the Hall of Fame, set several Chiefs records, won himself a ring, and gave us one of the most legendary pictures of the pre-merger NFL.
I think he's more than happy with that trade-off. We are, too.
