3 Players Chiefs Need to Extend Other Than Patrick Mahomes This Offseason
By Mark Powell
Signing the best quarterback in the entire world to a contract extension is no doubt the Chiefs top priority heading into the 2020 offseason, but they have a few other players up for new deals as well. If the Chiefs are smart, they'll take care of their own while they still have a chance, keeping this loaded roster in tact.
3. Tyrann Mathieu
Sure, the Chiefs just signed Mathieu, but he's proven incredibly valuable in his short time in Kansas City. Similar to Mahomes, Mathieu's deal is up in 2022 and if the Chiefs are smart, they'll make a new contract for the vocal leader of their defense a priority before then.
2. Damien Williams
Williams is a bit of a wild card on the Chiefs' offense, but his importance to their attack cannot be understated. His deal is up come 2021 and given the fact he'll be 28 years of age, he'll want to cash in. Instead, the Chiefs should give Williams a modest deal now while they have the chance and avoid a headache next offseason.
1. Chris Jones
Jones is a UFA this offseason and could be franchise tagged, as it's very unlikely the Chiefs let him walk. It remains to be seen if the Chiefs have the budget to extend both Mahomes and Jones in the same offseason, as both will require hefty deals. Yet, Jones arguably remains a higher priority considering his value to the Chiefs defensive line, and most importantly that he's a free agent...right now.
