Chiefs Could Already Have Next Offensive Coordinator Lined Up if Eric Bieniemy Departs
Success begets success. For the Kansas City Chiefs, this concept has become very real, as the team is now preparing to lose their OC Eric Bieniemy, who has become one of the hottest head coach candidates on the market, this offseason.
With the team set to lose their second OC in three seasons (Matt Nagy left to coach the Bears in 2018), the Chiefs appear to have a very good contingency plan for the position, QB coach Mike Kafka.
Kafka, a career backup QB in the NFL, is seen as a "rising star" among many insiders, thanks to his work with Patrick Mahomes. Assuming Bieniemy parlays his success as the team's play caller into a head coaching gig, Kafka would seemingly be a great replacement, given his familiarity with Mahomes' strengths and weaknesses.
Given Andy Reid's public support for Bieniemy as a HC candidate, it appears as though the team is prepared for their offensive coordinator to depart.
While it hurts to see a successful member of the coaching staff leave, this is the tax that a team is faced with when they install innovative and effective systems into the game. Good thing for the Chiefs they have a next man up ready for the job.
