Despite establishing himself as one of the NFL's most important players, Kansas City Chiefs gunslinger Patrick Mahomes will end up making just $4.5 million for the 2019 season on his rookie deal, a figure that ranks 32nd (!) among quarterbacks.

That narrative, of course, is going to turn on its head before long. The question at hand is simply whether his contract extension is signed this offseason or next. Right on cue, according to Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt, the organization plans on extending Mahomes "sometime in the next 12 to 15 months."

So, it could be tomorrow but it could be... in more than a full year?

It goes without saying that Kansas City is committed to Mahomes, but they don't necessarily have to thread the needle as it pertains to inking him to an extension straight away.

Though some fans in Arrowhead may have anticipated their franchise extending the generational talent this offseason, Showtime isn't slated for free agency until 2022. As long as their offer -- which we fully expect to shatter the existing league record -- is proposed by next offseason, the Chiefs won't risk alienating him.

Mahomes will be just 25 at this time next year, meaning he's perfectly positioned to sign two groundbreaking contracts extensions over the course of his career. There's no reason for fans in KC to freak out after Hunt's comments. Patience is a virtue, and it's required here.
