Chiefs GM Brett Veach Reveals Target Dates for Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones Contract Extensions
By Michael Luciano
The Kansas City Chiefs have not one, but two humungous contract extensions to plan for. Andy Reid and Brett Veach are trying to figure out how to sign both quarterback Patrick Mahomes and defensive tackle Chris Jones for the long haul.
Veach is trying to get both of these guys signed when training camp rolls around, but he does say that the team has "a lot of time."
Chiefs fans have to at least LOVE that timetable!
Mahomes needs no introduction or confirmation that he is the best quarterback in football at the moment considering his MVP season in 2018 and Super Bowl Championship last year puts him at the very top of the list. Jones has become one of the best interior pass rushers in football, compiling 24.5 sacks over his last 29 games during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
The Chiefs are currently owners of one of the most precarious cap situations in football. They have just a few million dollars in space at the moment. Both of these mammoth contracts are expected to make Mahomes and Jones the highest-paid players at their positions, which should force Kansas City to part with other talent.
Mahomes and Jones are the two cornerstones for Kansas City on either side of the ball, and Veach is smart enough to understand that the Chiefs will always have a puncher's chance at the Super Bowl as long they're in town.
