Chiefs Reserve Quarterback EJ Manuel Announces Retirement from Football
By Adam Godfrey
The Kansas City Chiefs have one of the best and arguably the most entertaining quarterback in the NFL in Patrick Mahomes. With the league MVP firmly in place, the Chiefs are set at the position for many years to come, with veteran backup QB Chad Henne waiting in the wings in case of emergency.
With two quarterbacks ahead of him, third-stringer EJ Manuel announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday.
Manuel was a first-round pick back in 2013, when he was selected by the Buffalo Bills with the 16th overall pick. He played his college football at Florida State University, and led the Seminoles to their first BCS game since 2000, winning the Oragen Bowl his senior year.
After being drafted, he spent five seasons in Buffalo, appearing in 28 games for the Bills over those five years. Of those 28, he started 17 games, and later moved on to Oakland to play for the Raiders for one season. He played two games for them and only started one.
In his 30 career games, he completed 343 passes on 590 attempts, finishing with a 77.5 QBR. Manuel threw for 3,767 yards along with 20 touchdowns against 16 interceptions. He added 339 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns in his career.
Manuel was a part of a dreadful quarterback draft in 2013, and none of those drafted is a starting quarterback in the NFL today. But at 29 years of age, he has all the time in the world to reinvent himself following an inconsistent pro career.
